I'm Still Alive!

Yes, I'm still alive and well - I just haven't managed to find time to post the last few days!

Thursday was a busy shopping day for my mom, sister, and I. Our closest ALDI store is about an hour away and we drove down there in the morning to stock up on staples. As if that didn't take up enough of our time, we shopped the afternoon away (mostly at Walmart). Shopping at ALDIs means we can buy less at Walmart. :-) Whew... shopping can sure wear a person out!

Yesterday (Friday) I was job shadowing a great ICU nurse at the hospital (who happens to be my dad!), so I was gone all day.

Thanks for being so patient with me! Even though this is Saturday, I intend to post a list of freebies later today to make up for the two weekdays I missed. See ya'll later!

A Glimpse Of My Life

It is a rainy day here. The gentle rain has been falling steadily most of the day. It's exactly what our fields and gardens were thirsty for!

This afternoon my sister and I borrowed our brothers' rain ponchos and headed out to the garden to dig some potatoes for supper. I steamed them and tossed them with butter, salt, and pepper. I served them with a spicy sausage cheese sauce. I also baked a pan of hot cinnamon rolls with caramel frosting ( a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon!) and put together a bowl of 3-bean salad.

As we sat down and began to eat, my dad mentioned that the salad sure tasted good, but it was different. He asked what I had done differently. I was rather perplexed as I was SURE the only thing different I had done was use red beans instead of kidney beans and that wouldn't change the taste a bit. I had noticed the salad tasted strangely sweet, but figured it just hadn't been refrigerated long enough for the flavors to meld. Then my dad said it tasted as if there was less vinegar in it than usual. But how could that be? I had used the same amount as I always had - 1/2 cup!

Just to play it safe, I rose from the table to check the vinegar bottle. Sure enough, the label said "distilled white vinegar". But one sniff told me it was NOT vinegar! It was then I noticed the sediment on the bottom of the bottle. It was water... rain water collected from past rain storms to use on our plants and flowers! EKKKKKK!

I felt bad, but my family had a huge laugh over it! I just pray that no one will get sick tonight. I'll be able to breath better tomorrow when we all wake up healthy!

So now you know what an awesome cook I am! :-)

Of Blogs and Storms

I am sorry I didn't get a post out yesterday. I was planning on doing that in the quiet of the evening, but the weather had other ideas! After supper, thunderstorms were brewing in the distance and my family and I were outside watching the clouds and lightning. I ended up unplugging my laptop since I don't like to work on it when it's really lightning and thundering.

We desperately needed the rain, but we only got less than 1/4 inch. But hey, that's better than nothing! I'm sure our gardens soaked up every precious drop.

I promise I'll try to catch up with the latest freebies later today and thanks for being so patient with me!

What Have I Been Up To?

I haven't baked any bread for awhile and am all out of practice! I baked a loaf of honey wheat bread yesterday and it sweetly collapsed (I think I over proofed the dough.) on me. That made me determined to bake as many loaves as needed until I baked one that didn't collapse! I baked another loaf today, watched it with an eagle eye and even prayed over it. It turned out beautifully, except that it was just a mite too golden brown. But I was tickled pink that it didn't collapse! :-D There is a world of difference between homemade bread and the store bought bread. It tastes heavenly and is cheaper to make with no artificial colors or preservatives.
